Cedar apple rust Gymnosporanium juniperi-virginianae

Barrie spotted this as soon as he got out of the car. The wind was moderate hence I didn't get very good pictures. We found a few morels too. It was a very steep climb to get into this site.

That's a cool picture. I have noticed a "rust" type of growth on several mayapple plants this spring. I saw this in at least two widely seperated areas. In each case it only appeared on one plant and did not affect other plants growing nearby. I'm not sure how many "rust" species there are or how specialized they are in selection of plant hosts. I did find it quite curious that one plant would be affected, while hundreds of others growing in close proximity were seemingly unaffected.
